We Will Realize the Ideal of a Common Life of the Suruç Martyrs

We commemorate with respect and gratitude all the martyrs of revolution and democracy in the person of the 33 members of the Socialist and Revolutionary Youth Movement of Turkey who were martyred in the attack carried out by the AKP-MHP fascist government on July 20, 2015. We reiterate our promise that we will adhere to the memories of the martyrs and bring their struggle to victory. The Suruç Martyrs represent the solidarity and joint struggle of the Socialist and Revolutionary Movement of Turkey with the Kurdistan Freedom Struggle. As the Kurdish Freedom Movement, we state once again that we will definitely realize their memory by further growing the joint struggle led by the Suruç Martyrs.

The Revolutionary Youth, members of the Socialist and Revolutionary Youth Movement of Turkey, came to Suruç in solidarity with Kobanê and for the reconstruction of Kobanê. These young people, who had revolutionary thoughts and feelings of solidarity, were not engaged in any action or movement that would be a crime according to any law. They wanted to contribute to the rebuilding of Kobanê with revolutionary thoughts and feelings of solidarity with the Kurdish people. This is what they were in Suruç for. However, the AKP-MHP fascist government, in its hysteria to avenge Kobanê, committed a massacre in the guise of Daesh [ISIS].

The Suruç Massacre was organized and carried out as a revenge of AKP-MHP fascism, which suffered defeat due to the Kobanê Victory. The fall of Kobanê had been a strategic plan for the AKP-MHP. AKP-MHP fascism aimed to liquidate the Rojava Revolution, which had just taken place, and to create a new state in Syria under the domination of religious-fascist gangs, by crushing Kobanê with the help of Daesh. However, the fact that Kobanê could not be overthrown by Daesh nullified this policy of the AKP-MHP. This situation created a great sense of anger and revenge in the AKP-MHP. Therefore, they acted with this sense of revenge against everyone who stood with the Kurdish people in the victory against Daesh and contributed to the liberation of Kobanê.

With the massacre in Suruç, AKP-MHP fascism started the genocidal war it had planned against the Kurds. While the fall of Kobanê frustrated the AKP-MHP’s plans, the success of the joint political movement of the Kurdish people and the revolutionary democratic sections of Turkey in the June 7, 2015 elections ended the AKP-MHP’s rule and very important steps were taken for Turkey to enter a new process. With the end of the AKP-MHP rule, the obstacle to the democratic solution of the Kurdish question and the realization of Turkey’s democratic transformation had been removed. The democratic solution of the Kurdish question and the democratization of Turkey would now lead to the democratization of the Middle East and a new process based on the brotherhood, equality and common will of the peoples in the region would begin. In fact, the reconstruction of Kobanê meant the construction of the Democratic Modernity process and members of the Socialist and Revolutionary Youth Movement of Turkey had come to Suruç for exactly this purpose. However, AKP-MHP and deep state structures formed a nationalist, racist and anti-Kurdish fascist alliance in order to prevent the democratic solution of the Kurdish question and the democratization of Turkey and to maintain the existence of the genocidal colonialist state order and took the first step of a dark process that started with the Suruç massacre. Thus, the all-out war declared by the AKP-MHP fascist government on July 24, 2015, aimed at the Kurdish genocide, was launched with the Suruç Massacre.

The fall of Kobanê had brought an end to the rule of the fascist chief Tayyip Erdoğan and started a new process that would develop on the basis of democratization in Turkey. In the June 7, 2015 elections, the success of the HDP, which received the support of the Kurdish and Turkish democratic and socialist movements, women, democratic Islamic groups, Alevis, laborers and all democratic circles, politically demonstrated the defeat of the AKP government. But the fascist chief Tayyip Erdoğan aimed to stop the defeat he suffered by allying with the registered Kurdish enemy fascist Devlet Bahçeli and the deep structures of the state on the basis of Kurdish genocide. Thus, the fascist order was established in Turkey. AKP-MHP fascism launched an all-out war against the Kurdish people and the socialist and democratic forces of Turkey within the framework of the Subjugation Plan and entered the process of massacres. The first of these massacres was the Suruç Massacre. After the Suruç Massacre, on July 24, a process of genocide and liquidation was launched against the Kurdish people and the Kurdish Freedom Guerrilla, and directed against the forces of democracy and democratic politics. A special war was also launched against society and a process of oppression was initiated. In short, Turkey and North Kurdistan were taken into a fascist cage. This process has continued uninterruptedly until today. However, despite all the attacks and massacres of the AKP-MHP fascist alliance, the defeat they suffered with the victory of Kobanê could not be prevented and the downward spiral continued deepening. Today, AKP-MHP fascism is on the verge of collapse.

The Suruç Massacre was committed by the AKP-MHP alliance formed by Tayyip Erdoğan and Devlet Bahçeli in agreement with deep state structures. Giving the massacre the appearance of Daesh is a tactic to hide the truth. In fact, it was AKP-MHP fascism that supported, directed and led Daesh against the Kurds. This situation is obvious and clearly known by everyone. The main reason why the AKP-MHP turned against the members of the Socialist and Revolutionary Youth Movement of Turkey in Suruç was because of their contribution to the defense of Kobanê against the Daesh invasion. The victory of Kobanê was achieved with the great solidarity and support of our people in the north and the friends of the Kurdish people, especially the Revolutionary and Socialist Youth Movement of Turkey and all democratic and libertarian groups with a conscience. Since this victory meant the defeat of the fascist chief Tayyip Erdogan and the AKP, they turned against the socialist and revolutionary youth of Turkey, who had made a significant contribution to the defense of Kobanê and the victory, and wanted to avenge this with the massacre in Suruç.

The young people who were martyred in the Suruç Massacre walked in the footsteps of Deniz Gezmiş, Mahir Çayan, Ibrahim Kaypakkaya and Hikmet Kıvılcımlı, the pioneers of the Socialist and Revolutionary Movement of Turkey. These pioneers of the Socialist and Revolutionary Movement of Turkey believed that the liberation of the people of Turkey would be based on a common struggle with the Kurdish people and the brotherhood of the peoples, and they actively fought for this. Deniz Gezmiş’s call for the brotherhood of the Turkish and Kurdish peoples right before his execution clearly demonstrated how important this was. Leader Apo [Abdullah Öcalan] and the PKK have always attached importance to the joint struggle of the Kurdish people and the peoples of Turkey, and the joint organization of the revolution in Turkey and the revolution in Kurdistan, and have always made efforts for this. The example of solidarity put forward by the Socialist and Revolutionary Movement of Turkey in the defense of Kobanê and the Suruç Martyrs have clearly demonstrated that the goal of developing the common struggle of the Kurdish people and the peoples of Turkey, which was initiated by revolutionaries like Deniz Gezmiş and to which Leader Apo adhered and for which he was in an uninterrupted effort for its realization, has been met and realized. In this respect, the Suruç Martyrs are the symbols of the brotherhood of the peoples and the pioneering revolutionary militants of the common struggle strategy. They are the comrades of Deniz, Mahir, Ibrahim, Haki, Kemal, Mazlum and Leader Apo.

The youth have the responsibility to protect the memories and struggles of the Turkish socialist and revolutionary youth who were martyred in Suruç and to carry their struggle forward by following in their footsteps. They must act with this responsibility. The brotherhood of the peoples, the common struggle of the peoples of Kurdistan and Turkey and the development of the revolution in Kurdistan and the revolution in Turkey is only possible with the leadership of the youth. As the pioneers of the youth movement, revolutionaries like Deniz Gezmiş led the struggle of the Socialist and Revolutionary Movement of Turkey, became the owners of a great historical development and created great values. The PKK, too, developed as a part of the Socialist and Revolutionary Youth Movement of Turkey and has managed to create so much progress by always fighting in this spirit. Leader Apo revealed the spirit and character of the Kurdistan Revolution by saying “We started young, we will succeed young”. With this revolutionary spirit and identity, the youth must organize themselves everywhere and increase the struggle even more.

University youth must take the lead in educating, raising awareness and organizing the youth masses. Intellectual youth have such a responsibility towards society and the youth masses. The system of genocidal colonialism and capitalist modernity is able to maintain its order of exploitation by suppressing the youth, the dynamic and life-changing element of life, through many means of oppression and numbing. Therefore, in order to break the wheel of exploitation, it is very important for the youth to stand up, get rid of the oppression on them and lead the revolution. It is the duty of university youth, who are the enlightened youth, to ensure this. Today, as in the past, the university youth in Turkey and Kurdistan must take ownership of this historical and social responsibility and mobilize and lead the society by raising awareness and organizing the masses of the youth. By fulfilling these responsibilities, the youth can take responsibility for the young people who were martyred in Suruç and be worthy of them by further developing their struggle.

As a result of the joint struggle of the peoples of Kurdistan and Turkey, AKP-MHP fascism has come to the brink of collapse. The attacks and massacres carried out by the AKP-MHP will not be able to stop their collapse. The destruction of AKP-MHP is certain. The common struggle of the peoples of Kurdistan and Turkey, marching on the line of the Suruç Martyrs, will bring about the destruction of the AKP-MHP and the democratic solution of the Kurdish question will ensure the democratization of Turkey and the Middle East. Today, AKP-MHP fascism is threatening to invade Rojava again and attacks are taking place in order to stop its collapse and to realize its goals that were frustrated by the struggle of the Suruç Martyrs. Just as the Suruç Martyrs did yesterday, today, these invasion attacks of the AKP-MHP must be nullified by defending the Rojava revolution and the AKP-MHP fascism must be destroyed. We call on everyone, especially the youth of Kurdistan and Turkey, to come together in the line of the Suruç Martyrs and to increase the common struggle for the success of this historic struggle against AKP-MHP fascism.

As the Kurdistan Freedom Movement, we once again state that, in accordance with the promise we made to the Suruç Martyrs and all the martyrs of revolution and democracy, we will further develop the joint struggle, bring the struggle for freedom and democracy of the peoples of Turkey and Kurdistan to success and realize the ideal of a common life. With this belief and determination, we once again commemorate all the martyrs of revolution and democracy in the person of the Suruç Martyrs with respect and gratitude, and we repeat our promise that we will make the martyrs’ struggle a success.
